Feb 19, 2020 SIDE EFFECTS. The following adverse reactions have been identified during post-approval use of PLAQUENIL or other 4-aminoqunoline compounds. Because these reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or establish a causal relationship to drug exposure. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining. The answer was that while Hydroxychloroquine, the generic name for Plaquenil and the tablet I take in the same dose as yourself i.e. 200mg a day at the moment, is a disease modifying drug and an anti-malarial, it is also a mild immunosuppressant too. So this could be why your immune system is so low at the moment.

1 month ago and prior to taking it I rarely ever got sick with colds, flu etc. I am asking this question, because I started this med approx.

Rapid Heartbeat with Plaquenil - Lupus - MedHelp I had tachycardia before I went on Plaquinel. That has been so much better since I've got the med in my system. The only times I have tachycardia is when I'm having a lupus flare. If tachycardia is a side affect of Plaquinel, I am not aware of it.
