    How plaquenil works for sjogrens

It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

I read on Wikipedia about the Sjogren's syndrome and I connected the eye dryness with Raynaud's phenomenon. I went to a rheumatologist. I was told to do the anti-nuclear antibodies test, which was negative. Then I was to do some blood-work and check with an eye doctor, regarding the permission to use a drug called Plaquenil. Plaquenil does not work for everyonebut thankfully it does for me. Without Plaquenil, I am sleeping most of the day and unable to accomplish much. Plaquenil also takes time to build up in your body to determine whether it works for one person and not another. For me, it was about 6-months. I believe Drs generally state 3-6 months for patients. I met a lady yesterday where I work with sjogren's, first time I have met someone face to face. It was actually pretty discouraging. She showed me how dry her arms were and told me how she can't even go out and do things longer than a few hours. She finish with how she had been on Prednisone and Plaquenil and she was miserable.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

  4. I completely agree with Lynnwood that plaquenil helps stop the progression of your disease, so the longer you wait the worse your Sjogren's becomes. Plaquenil is a fairly benign medication and was originally developed to protect against malaria. Later it was found to help autoimmune diseases. It can be months before you get relief with plaquenil.

Hi - I just started Plaquenil 400 mg a day two week ago and I started feeling less achy and tired a few days ago. Is it possible for it to work quicker in some people? I've heard it can take months, but I must say that I haven't felt like this since I was a kid - not achy or stiff. Has anyone had a similar Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a drug designed to treat malaria, is often helpful in treating Sjogren's syndrome. Drugs that suppress the immune system, such as methotrexate Trexall, also might be prescribed. Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory.
